Statewide proposals dot the ballot. The News-Herald Newspapers today continue its endorsement of political candidates and questions in Tuesday's general election.

Proposal 3: A referendum on Public Act 160 of 2004 to allow the establishment of a hunting season for mourning doves.

This would authorize the Natural Resources Commission to establish a hunting season for mourning doves, along with a dove stamp and other practices that would accompany such a practice.

We endorse a "no" vote on the proposal. mourning doves have been protected in Michigan for a century and a hunting season for them serves no wildlife management purpose. These doves are not a viable food source. There is no logical reason for hunting them.
